What is Pet Scan?

Basics of PET Scanning

By showing and measuring the metabolic activity of tissue cells, PET strain is able to provide physicians with more accurate information about malignant diseases, brain and heart diseases, and help him make more accurate decisions about the disease.

The most important applications of PET-CT in malignant diseases are ischemic heart disease and brain diseases. PET-CT is most commonly used in lung, colon and rectum cancers (colon and end), lymphoma, breast, melanoma, esophagus, head and neck tumors, thyroid, ovary, cervix and testis.

Another important application of PET-CT in heart disease is that it can accurately determine the blood supply status of the heart wall, the viability of the heart muscle and its function. In brain diseases, it is also used in cases of memory disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as in accurate determination of seizure center for diagnosis and guidance of surgeon (in case of need for surgical intervention in cases of refractory seizures).

How does the PET device work?

PET is an advanced imaging device that has major differences with other current imaging methods. To perform PET scion, it is necessary to inject a small amount of a radiopharmaceutical, mainly simple sugar marked with a radioactive substance, into the patient’s body.

This drug is distributed in the patient’s body and each tissue of the body harvests it according to its metabolic activity. Tissues with high metabolism, including malignant cells and inflammatory tissues, strongly absorb this substance, while in damaged and destroyed tissues, including in heart strokes and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, radioactic glucose harvesting decreases.

PET device is able to record the distribution of the drug in the patient’s body by recording radioactic radiation. Existing imaging methods such as CT scion are mainly based on the study of anatomical properties of lesions such as enlargement, abnormal deformity of tissues and exact location of involvement, while PET scavenging examines the metabolic and functional characteristics of lesions. For this reason, PET suction is able to diagnose diseases in much more severe stages before their anatomical changes occur in CT scion by showing their metabolic and functional changes. In addition, when the aim of the study is to investigate the response to treatment, pet device is able to respond or not respond to treatment much earlier than CT sken or MRI.

Currently, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran provides these radiopharmaceves to centers that are subject to restrictions. In the message pet scan center, for the greater convenience of patients and to prevent disruption and irregularities in the imaging process, cyclotron (accelerator) and laboratory (hotlab) preparation of radioactive drugs has been launched.

Pet Mammography is a new method for preparing images of breasts. In this method, such as pet scan, glucose consumption in different tissues is shown as an image. Thus, malignant breast diseases are diagnosed much earlier. Also, although in conventional mammography, it is often not possible to detect simple cysts from malignant masses, in mammography this means cleaning benign cysts of breast cancer tumors is easy.

• Nuclear Medicine Imaging Systems

In addition to all the advanced devices described, the SPECT device used for nuclear medicine imaging has also been installed at the Message Pet Scan Center.
